Angels' Blood Countdown: Christine Wells - Wicked Little Game ARC

Winner: The random numbers have rolled and the winner is Katy! Katy, please email me at nalinisinghwrites AT gmail DOT com.

Only one more sleep to go to
the release of ANGELS' BLOOD! Here's what A.R. Bovey, one of the winners of the ARC contest had to say about it:

It wouldn't be a Nalini Singh book if the characters weren't sharply drawn. The two leading characters and several secondaries were clearly delineated - given enough personality to (hopefully!) warrant future writing.

I want MORE...A fabulous book and a strong start to what I hope is a lengthy series!

Tonight, I've g
ot an ARC of a historical that sounds deliciously wicked. Christine Wells' Wicked Little Game releases in July and the ARC will be posted out as soon as she gets it!

Check out the blurb and tell me you're not intrigued:
“You want my wife. You always have…”

For years, the Marquis of Vane has hungered for Lady Sarah from afar, watching the beauty brave a cruel marriage. When Sarah’s wastrel husband makes Vane a shocking proposal—one night with Sarah for £10,000—the temptation is almost too great. Tricked by her husband into fulfilling his wicked bargain, Sarah can’t refuse a night of exquisite pleasure with the devastating man who haunts her dreams.

But neither she nor Vane imagined their passionate encounter would set the stage for murder, or that a deadly twist of fate could spell a love to last all time…
Today's entry question is inspired by the giveaway: Which historical period is your favorite setting?

Me, I'm a Regency girl, though I did have a love affair with Vikings for a while!

I love (all) historicals - I really can't choose just one! This book sounds great, thanks Nalini.

I don't have one favorite, anything before the 20th century is good. However, I wouldn't mind reading more books set after medieval times but before the Georgian or Regency era.

ShellBell said...

I love reading most historicals, but I do have a preference for medieval novels or those set in the Regency era

dancechica said...

This is always a hard question for me, but I tend to gravitate towards books set during the Victorian era so I will have to say that's my favorite, though I do enjoy the Regency era and occasionally the Georgian era. I also have an interest in stories set in British India.

10th-12th century, I do adore that time period..but the regency era is my second love :)

I actually love Victorian Era, the lace and outfits are glorious. Though I haven't come across too many stories set in this time period other than Anna Jacobs. If anyone has any authors they could recommend I'd be grateful.

Christine Wells said...

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for dropping in to help Nalini celebrate her fantastic new series.

Big waves to Helen! Lovely to see you here:)

Wow, there's quite a variety of tastes expressed already--I'm impressed! I love almost any era of history. It's the author that makes the period come alive, IMO. Having said that, I do love Georgian but I think Regency just wins out by a small margin. Then again, I'm very partial to Victorian-set romances like Lisa Kleypas's and Donna MacMeans.

Oh, Nat! You must read those Victorian ladies I mentioned! They're wonderful reads. I always thought of the Victorian era as dreadfully stuffy and dull, but I think the undercurrents of suppressed passion make the era even more fun. You might also enjoy Lisa Valdez's Passion.

I go more for medieval form 1066 until the tudor age. And especially set in Britain. I love stories set in Wales!

Maureen said...

I like a variety of historical settings but I do really enjoy the Regency period with the balls and gowns and opulence.

Dannyfiredragon said...

Historicals were my first romances, even before I started with paranormals and much later Contemporaries. I love Regency as well as Medievals

Kytaira said...

I'm yet another Regency girl. I also enjoy Victorian and Georgian but Regency wins.

Margay Leah Justice said...

As far as reading is concerned, my favorite is the Regency, but I would love to write something set in the Victorian period circa the turn of the century.

I love and read anything historical that's before the 1900's but have a slight preference for Medieval and Scottish historicals

Anonymous said...

I'm another one who just can't get enough Regency. Earlier Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian are all solidly in second place.

Christine, I can't wait for your new book!

Jess (The Cozy Reader) said...

I'm not sure! I don't read too many historical romances but I do enjoy the Regency era as well.

I love reading when the setting is set in Ireland or Scotland....love it!

I love Georgian by the virtue of Jo Beverley's Marquess of Rothgar. I read JB's Malloren series and that period became my favorite after that.

KT Grant said...

I love the Victorian period the best.

Tannun said...

Are Futuristics a period? If not, I guess medievil

Christine M. said...

Regency is my favourite and I blame it entirely on Ms Austen. Her books marked me when I was still a young teenager.

kim said...

I like Regency and also those set in Scotland - especially Hannah Howell's series.

The Brunette Librarian said...

I LOVE regency and Medieval! Once in the while I'm in the mood for some Scottish stuff too! :)

Marnie said...

Not really into historical. Is steampunk count? I guess if I was forced to choose it would be way back in time when the Egyptian Pharoh's ruled.

Trish Milburn said...

Sounds great! Every time I hear the title of Christine's book, Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" starts playing in my head. :)

Congrats on your new release, Nalini.

Minna said...

19th century.

Danni T said...

I don't really have a favorite. I will read them all. Though I probably read Victorian the most.

CrystalGB said...

I love the Regency era.

Unknown said...

I like the Regency, but I don't really mind other periods, too. And, of course, moderns are my favorite!

azteclady said...

Hhmmm I don't think I have a preference, as long as the writing evokes the time well.

And wow but this one sounds really great! (if the blurb can be trusted... which I rarely do *sigh*)

jo robertson said...

Hi, Naline, congratulations on your release!

I adore historicals too, but my favorite is the Victorian period. I love the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series by Anne Perry, although not strictly romance, as well as her William Monk series.

Can't wait for Christine's WLG to be released. I love the premise!

Eva S said...

I love all historicals but if I'm to choose only one it's medieval.

Angela said...

Medievals are my favorites, but Regencies come in close behind that.

Anonymous said...

My favorite would be Georgian. Regency comes in a close second but that might be because there are so many of them out there done by great authors :)

Anonymous said...

I love all historicals-they really are awesome. I have a few favs though, including Regency and anything that has to do with Highlanders.

Anonymous said...

I'm not too picky but I love Jane Austen time. Really, I'm happy with anything where the girls get to dress in big, beautiful clothes. My inner girly girl is sooo jealous.

Lisa said...

I love all historicals but if have to pick favorite would have to say Victorian. Then in close second Regency.

Unknown said...

I love Medievals, but have a hard time finding many to read. Regency is probably my next favorite era, simply because that's when the majority of historicals I read are set during.

donnas said...

I havent read many historicals yet but so far my favorites are medieval or Regency.

Anonymous said...

I love the Regency era though medieval times were quite interesting as well...

Anonymous said...

I like Regency's and the Middle Ages most, but I read all kinds of historicals. It sometimes depends on the story which I like most.

Anonymous said...

For years now it has been Regency era(early 1800's).

When I first began reading romances all I would read were time period romances, mainly Native American Indian Westerns that featured kidnapped woman or strong trail woman and their men hacking it out in the wilderness. Then I picked up Nora Roberts flower series and then discovered Linda Howard's MacKenzies family and it was open season on all romances period!

Anna Campbell said...

Hi Nalini! Congratulations on Angel's Blood hitting the stands any day now. Hi Christine!

Actually I've read Wicked Little Game (it involved bribery, blackmail and other assorted coercion!). And it's wonderful!

Actually as a writer, I must say, I love the Regency period. There's so much scope for different stories from lighter than souffle to deep, dark and dangerous like an abandoned coal mine. Hmm, does that mean my books are like abandoned coal mines? Surely not!

Peggy M. said...

I love most historicals but especially the medieval times and the regency era.

MaryK said...

European historical. It really depends on the book itself rather than a particular era so I can't narrow it down more than that.

Karin said...

Regency is definitely my favorite time period in history. But I also have a huge soft spot for the late 1600s when Queen Elizabeth I was ruling England. I also have another soft spot for ancient Greece and ancient Rome - though more from a straight historical perspective than from a romance novel perspective.

Una said...

I really do not have a favorite historical setting. As long as the author can convey it in a realistic way (at least that it FEELS realistic) I'm good to go!

alanajoli said...

Pirates. Definitely pirates. :) I went on a long pirate kick for awhile, and the best part is that you can get pirates in the Viking era or pirates in the regency era--or the golden age of piracy down in the Carribean. They're so swashbucklingly sexy!

Darcy Jo said...

Ancient Greece. Hands down. Almost. I DO love men in kilts and a sexy Scottish brogue. Crap, now I can't choose!! Is it weird that both of my favorites feature men without pants?

Mary M. said...

Yum! That book sounds fabulous!

My preference would go to Regency historicals. You can blame Julia Quinn for that - she was my introduction to the period :-DD. However, I'm not sure where the separation between periods is, so I tend to call every book set in the first half of the 19th century a Regency. I know Queen Victoria died in 1901 so I'm reasonably sure second half would be Victorian but as for the rest...I have no idea when the Georgian era is. Which George are we talking about there? I think there have been like six. I know, I should educate myself about British history :-D.

British India (thanks dancechica) is another setting I love. Anything set in India, actually, but to go with the historical theme, British India :-D

I also like the books of Lucy Maud Montgomery, set in Prince Edward Island (Canada) at the turn of the 20th century, but since they were actually written at that time, it's not the same type of historicals. Classics are in another category for me :).

orannia said...

Hmmmmm - tricky. I do love the Regency era (have been watching Hornblower on TV of late - Ioan Gruffudd in dressed as a Regency buck would be stunning :)

Saying that, I love medievals, especially returning Crusader medievals :)

I love the Regency era but after reading so many books about knights and dragons. I am starting love the medieval era.

I really don't have a favorite. As long as it's well written, I usually enjoy it.

Bridget Locke said...

It doesn't matter to me as long as the book is good.

Having said that, I seem to prefer regencies and the Highlands over most of the other settings. I'm not a big Victorian fan. I found the strictures of that time period beyond stifling. It's hard to find a really good Victorian historical

Bridget Locke said...

However, one of my all-time favorite historicals is set during WWI. Years by LaVyrle Spencer. I know, how many more times can I pimp that book? :D

And I called B&N today to make sure I'd secured my copy of Angels' Blood. I so cannot wait to read it, esp. after reading Angel's Pawn.

Nalini-You are evil. In the best possible way, of course. he-he

I find reading any historical novel, be it regency, victorian or norman can transport you back into a make believe world where all the troubles and worries that we all experience today can be left behind, if only for a few hours. its great to read about those dark dangerous sexy men (especially the gorgeous highlanders) who all seem to have a sense of code and honor, if only their was such a thing as a time machine.

Hi everyone. Wow, what a great response! Thanks so much for commenting. I can see my ARC is going to go to a good home!

This is a very interesting exercise to me, because I think perhaps the readers of Nalini's blog aren't typical historical fans. It's clear there are a lot of popular eras that the publishers aren't tapping into. Verrrry interrrrestink!

Diser said...

Regency histoical period is my favorite. I also love it when mystery is added and are written in trilogie or series.
Thanks!

I'm not too particular when it comes to historicals.

Anonymous said...

I'm not too particular when it comes to historicals.

Anonymous said...

Victorian. I love reading about the new "technology" of the times; plus it's such a buttoned down period (and Ms. Wells said it best) the suppressed passion just vibrates off the page and once it's unleased... *fanning myself*
LOL - Katy

Unknown said...

Historicals were my first introduction into romance, and I still enjoy them. I love most highlander stories, and the regency era is a close second.

twalls said...

I prefer the Regency era.

Leslie said...

Love the Regency and Victorian periods but my favorite would be westerns. Love those cowboys!

The_Book_Queen said...

It's really hard to choose, but I've to say from Medieval up to the Regency era. As long as it has a good story line, etc, I'm interested! :D

Anonymous said...

I love most historical periods but my fave would have to be Regency!

Unknown said...

I'm not a big fan of historicals, though I will read a pirate story set anywhere/anytime. If I had to pick I would say Victorian and early Medieval.

Anonymous said...

I love historicals, but prefer the Regency era the best. The book definitely sounds intriguing!

Anonymous said...

I guess it would mostly be regencies. I also like the books set in the highlands of Scotland.

jeanette8042 said...

Definitely the Regency era where all of the characters are forced to follow strict rules of society.

limecello said...

Whoa - loved the blurb- congratulations on the upcoming release, Christine! I definitely want to read that book :)
As for my favorite historical period... I love Regencies and Victorians. :P They're also pretty close too, so... haha yeah - those two are my favorites.

Pam P said...

I love historicals as much as paranormals. Medievals, Vikings and Normas, and Regency, Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, I'll read them all.

Christina Phillips said...

Congrats on the release of Angels' Blood today, Nalini (at least I think it's today in Australia, lol!)

Christine, I love the sound of Wicked Little Game. OOOH!!

As for my fave historical period, I love history, but - as currently I'm completely besotted by Roman Centurions since I'm writing in that era - I'd have to go with the Roman occupation of Cymru!!!

Anonymous said...

Sounds like another great book Christine. I love the Regency period but I also enjoy the early modern period of the 17th century in England, particularly the Restoration period.

Pamk said...

don't really read historicals but this one sounds intriguing. Might have to make an exceptiion

Renee said...

Victorian era. It's all about the big pouffy dresses for me. Regency is a close second, though.

Anonymous said...

I love them all equally, I think, as long as they're portrayed with as much accuracy and detail as possible without get too pedantic.
